# WordPress ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE when trying to update

 * Hi,
 * When trying to update WordPress to version 4.9.4 from 4.8.2 ([http://serresariane.com/wp-admin/update-core.php](http://serresariane.com/wp-admin/update-core.php)),
   I get the following message on a blank page:
    “This page isn’t working serresariane.
   com didn’t send any data. ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE”
 * Same error message for [http://serresariane.com/wp-admin/options-general.php](http://serresariane.com/wp-admin/options-general.php)
 * Otherwise, other admin pages and frontend work fine.
 * How can I fix this issue?

 * Try [downloading WordPress](https://wordpress.org/download/) again, access your
   server via [SFTP or FTP](https://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients), or a file 
   manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your
   copies of everything except the `wp-config.php` file and the `/wp-content/` directory
   with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your
   core files without damaging your content and settings.
    Some uploaders tend to
   be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original 
   files before replacing them.

 * Issue fixed. Problem was caused by too restrictive file ownership (owner being
   root instead of www-data).
