Support » Installing WordPress » WordPress displaying only directory listing (not .htaccess issue)

  • Hey guys,

    I looked at some other posts and none of them have the answer to this.

    Here’s the problem. I am trying to set up a test/backup of my wordpress site on my local machine. I copied over the database, copied the wordpress directory, and change the appropriate values in the config file.

    But all I get when I go to http://localhost/homepage/ (my local address for the site) is a directory listing. Furthermore, when I actually manually click on index.php or go to http://localhost/homepage/index.php, I STILL get a directory listing.

    I am actually having this problem when trying to install a test Magento site on the same machine as well. I go to http://localhost/magento/install.php and get only a directory listing.

    I suspect that my Apache server or PHP installation is not configured correctly. Anyone have any ideas?

    Sincerely,
    David Sanders

  • What are you using on local machine?

    I’m using Windows 7.

    windows 7 is operating system what server have you installed wamp or easyphp are servers you can install on your windows and then install wordpress on the server.

    I am not running a server package. I installed Apache, PHP, and MySQL manually.

    Make a file named phpinfo.php and put at your server’s root– that is, in the directory you see when you go to http://localhost/ . In that file put <?php phpinfo(); ?>. Try clicking that. You still get a directory listing?

    Yes, phpinfo works fine. I also have another web app that I wrote from scratch which runs some simple database queries to MySQL and that works fine as well. And I recently made a simple test app using CakePHP and that worked.

    The only two things I’ve had problems with so far are WordPress and Magento.

    Are there log files I can be checking to try and track this down?

    in .htaccess file on first line add
    Directory Index index.php index.html index.htm
    and see this solves your problem

    Check Your Apache Configuration File httpd.conf
    and check these lines :
    If index.php is not there add at first place like this

    <IfModule dir_module>
        DirectoryIndex index.php index.php3 index.html index.htm
    </IfModule>

    Ahh, now I feel a bit foolish because I titled this post incorrectly. I assumed that this was not an .htaccess issue because manually specifying the URL like this (http://localhost/homepage/index.php) did not even give me a page but still a directory listing.

    But, when I added the right directive to .htaccess like you suggested, it ended up at least giving me a page that appears to lack any css styling. Thanks a lot for suggesting that again. I’m sorry I didn’t give that solution enough time before.

    Now I need to figure out why the page lacks css styling. I’ll try a few things to figure that out and if I can’t solve it, I’ll come back to you guys.

    Thank you!
