WordPress directory not redirecting to index.php

WordPress is working great, but only when I access the frontend from domain.com/index.php. When I just go to domain.com, I get a 404. I tested this with WordPress in a number of subdirectories, and still had the same problem. I also tested the both the root and a subdirectory with a different file also named index.php, and in that case, going to domain.com/ redirected to domain.com/index.php just fine, and domain.com/subdirectory redirected to domain.com/subdirectory/index.php without a problem. I can’t think of anything that would cause any directory not to respect index.php, when it loves all other index.phps. Is there anyone who can please help me figure this out?

    Forever in your debt,
    Kristina

  • Try resetting your permalinks back to the default (Settings / Permalinks in Dashboard menu). Before you do that record what the present settings are. After you set them back to default and save, then reset them to what they were before you changed them to default.

The reason for this is WordPress rewrites all of the redirection entries when the permalinks are turned off and then back on. Many (but not all) errors of the sort you report are corrected through this procedure.
