 * I have a client who updated their wordpress to version 4.2.2 and now there is
   a screen that states the following:
 * Database Update Required
 * I went in and tried to “update the database” three times and it takes me to a
   site 404 page. the site in question is [http://verdigreenhome.com](http://verdigreenhome.com)
 * i have read the many OLD posts about this subject and am unable to get to the
   dashboard to do anything. can you give me a work around should i be able to get
   in through their c panel or ftp?
 * any suggestions?
 * emily

 * try **MANUAL** re-updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file
   to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT
   the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete
   the old copies of files & folder on your server before uploading the new ones.
   Read the [Manual Update ](http://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update)
   directions first.
    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

 * well, i followed the instructions from someone in another thread to increase
   the memory (before I saw your reply) and now i have messed up the wp-config.php
   file and get the following error after uploading the edited file:
 * Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ”);’ (T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING) in /home/
   v3rd1gr33n/public_html/wp-config.php on line 103
 * so now the site is down.
 * i may faint. any help out there? thanks!!

 * well, i deleted the offending line from the file and the site is back up. now
   i am back to square one.
 * where would my client hire someone (not me, i am a designer, not a coder) to
   fix this for them?
 * thank you!

 * – always make a backup of file you want to edit.
 * – also, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions,
   just in case something really goes wrong.
 * – about “Parse error”:
 * When this error appears it will tell you which file the error appears in (wp-
   config.php for example) and approximately which line (it may not always be the
   exact line so be sure to check just before and just after) in the code.
 * ‘parse error: unexpected’ usually means that you have forgotten to include a
   character.

 * Thanks Tara!
 * I exported all of the content before I attempted the WordPress Update, thinking
   I was so smart, because I am always afraid of losing something. Then the whole
   database update thing happened.
 * Luckily their site is up, but they cannot update it and I am not smart enough
   to help them. Go Daddy told them to contact you. They don’t even know how to
   log into their site. I know how to log in, push pictures around and how to create
   widgets…i am a genius.
 * So here we are, blind leading the blind. HAHA. Thanks for trying to help me.
   I have suggested that they hire someone better educated than myself.
