For some reason, every image I use with WordPress seems to multiply like horny rabbits. I am not talking about thumbnail, medium, and large versions of original image files, the system seems to be duplicating one of the files for no reason whatsoever. Right now I’ve got over 35 copies of my new album cover. WTF?!?

Here’s what the image uploader looks like: Screenshot 1
    And my server: Screenshot 2

What the heck is going on here and how do I stop this? Hell, how do I clean up after this?

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Sorry, I probably should have mentioned that I already tried all the usual noob stuff like that. I’ve been working with WP for years now and assumed that everyone started with those steps.

And yes, my computer is plugged in. 😉

One of the problems here is that I don’t know what causes the file to duplicate.

    Oh… if only!

When did you last repair your database? Do you have any other WP sites on the same physical server?

Is there anything you’ve changed recently that has any chance of being relevant? New plugin, change in the media library, failed upload that preceded the problem, etc?

Did u ever figure this out. Something has been creating multiple picture files for me as well. I know the gallery did it, resizing, but now I’m getting dup pics with file name followed by a 1.

At the risk of sounding all AOL – “me too”. It’s been happening for some weeks now, though my problem sounds more like beanneu’s.

Files I’ve used plenty of times in the past are all of a sudden multiplying. When I use an archived image, the system seems to create a new copy (sometimes several) and use one of the instead of the original.

Getting rather annoying, and filling my media library up with a significant number of duplicates.
