  • I’m using WP 4.7.5 and can see that the latest version available is 4.8. On my WP Admin panel, I go to wp-admin/update-core and it says

You have the latest version of WordPress. Future security updates will be applied automatically.

When I force a check for updates, the last checked timestamp updates, but it still doesn’t pick up WP 4.8. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

  • I personally wouldn’t bother messing around trying to troubleshoot this. Just go in and do a manual update.

Download WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

    Thanks Matthew,

This is a maintenance task for a customer, so I was hoping to get away from doing manual updates for each WP release. I’ll see if I can write up a script to achieve the same effect though.

    Thanks again.

Well I am just thinking that perhaps the core files are messed up causing the update to not show. So replacing all the core files with not only update it but also make sure the core files are not corrupted.

Thanks for the thought behind that. I’ll do a manual update and keep an eye on it afterwards then.

    Thanks again for the help.
