Support » Everything else WordPress » WordPress-based Social Media Kit: GPL?

  • 1. WordPress itself as well as plugins and themes are licensed under GPL.

    2. Blogwerk, a Swiss blog publisher and social media consulting company, recently announced their ‘Social Media Kit’, based on WordPress. ‘Social Media Kit’ is basically a WordPress blog with customized theme, plugins for interaction with social networks, etc.

    3. Is Blogwerk obligated to publish its themes, plugins, etc. under GPL?

    Themes or plugins based on WordPress core should be GPL but it doesn’t mean that such would be released to public for free. Note that there are premium themes and premium plugins in the market today that have GPL licenses.

    @frankmeyer: should help:

    The GPL is an example of a powerful copyleft license that requires derived works to be available under the same copyleft. Under this philosophy, the GPL grants the recipients of a computer program the rights of the free software definition and uses copyleft to ensure the freedoms are preserved, even when the work is changed or added to. This is in distinction to permissive free software licenses, of which the BSD licenses are the standard examples.
