Try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.
If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Default theme (WordPress 1.5 – 2.9.2) or the Twenty Ten theme (WordPress 3.0 and higher) to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can sometimes interfere with the admin panel.
If neither of those work, you may need to repair the database.
Access your WordPress database via phpMyAdmin (most hosting providers offer this in their control panel), check all of the tables, and choose “Repair tables” from the pull-down menu.

Thanks. I thought I had fixed it by getting rid of a faulty plugin, but the problems persist. When I edit a post and switch the author, the visual editor stops working. Not sure why this is happening all of the sudden…I haven’t made any changes to the blog in a while.
Also, a link toyour site could help us look for anything fishy in your source code.
Your WP version 2.8.5 is pretty out of date, so vulnerable to hacking…. which can make the backend go all wonky

I want to upgrade to v3.0 but I use 1and1 as my host and that requires me to upgrade all my databases which I found to be very challenging.
Well, on the plus side..your source looks clean…no signs of hacks
If you can figure out the upgrade thing, that may help clear up your problem…if its file related
otherwise the help offered by @james is quite useful
