Support » Installing WordPress » WordPress Automatic Update – What happens EXACTLY?

  • Hi Fans!

I always update wordpress manually by doing the following steps:
    – Backup Files and SQL
    – Download locally the new wordpress files
    – Copy ALL files from the ZIP to the folder via FTP and overwrite ALL
    – Open /wp-admin/upgrade.php

That worked the last 10 upgrades like a charm.
What happens EXACTLY when doing the automatic upgrade?
What happens with files that are not needed anymore?
What happens to my custom themes?

This is a little out of date, but not for major upgrades like 3.5: http://halfelf.org/2011/how-the-wordpress-upgrade-works/

What happens EXACTLY when doing the automatic upgrade?

WordPress is downloaded, unziped, and the files are copied over.

What happens with files that are not needed anymore?

If they are marked to be removed, they are removed, however we don;t do that often.

What happens to my custom themes?

Nothing, unless you edited the default themes directly. Then it’s not really a custom theme, though…

Give this a read, it may answer your questions. It’s from 2011 but might still be applicable.
