WordPress Admin becoming slow – is host to be blamed?

    My WordPress admin becoming extremely slow – so slow that it is now affecting my frequency of posts.

    Before you say ‘disable plugins’ and stuff – I’ve done that already. In fact disabled the the plugin folder itself to see how the admin works but the problem remains the same. I’ve googled to find tens of thousands of remedies online and used as many as I could including some plugins but to no avail.

    It takes ages when I’m posting an article. It takes ages to save drafts, to open ’embed image’ overlay, to upload an image, to add captions to it and then to insert it. It is even longer to preview the draft. I get time out message several times.

    All this started around two/three months ago. I’ve been using Media Temple but having googled I realized that people have been having issues with their service.

    Is there anyone else who is in the same boat within past few month and if you know a solution to it?

    I’m willing to change my host from Media Temple to someone else if that’s what is required in the end!

    Do you face this problem only in Admin site or even in your blog pages also?

    If it is only in Admin site, then you need to run Firefox Firebug addon to check the Admin site. Under Net tab, it will clearly tell you which files are taking more time.
    May be there are some missing file redirection on Admin site.

    You may need to optimize the database.

    Access your WordPress database via phpMyAdmin (most hosting providers offer this in their control panel), check all of the tables, and choose “Optimize tables” from the pull-down menu.

    thanks for the suggestions.

    @ddsuresh I’ve used firebug but the exercise has been inconclusive since it was a different file everytime within Admin. But I’ll try it again.

    @macmanx I’ve been using a plugin (Optimise DB) to optimize the database but never tried it through phpMyAdmin so will let you know if it works.

    I get the following message quite often:

    Network Error (tcp_error)

    A communication error occurred: “”
    The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time.

    For assistance, contact your network support team.

    This doesn’t happen with other sites except when I’m accessing mine (admin or the blog it self).

    In that case, your problem definitely sounds like it’s due to a server that is either overloaded or suffering frequent hardware or software failures.

    You should contact your hosting provider ASAP. If their answer is not satisfactory, consider switching to a new hosting provider.
