Support » Fixing WordPress » WordPress 5.8 Still Rejects WebP Images

  • Hi.

A few days ago, I updated my website to WordPress 5.8, and since WebP is now supported, I decided to try using some WebP images to speed up my site. However, when I try to upload a WebP file to my media library, I get an error:

This image cannot be processed by the web server. Convert it to JPEG or PNG before uploading.

I’ve tried logging in and logging out, but I still get the error as though I were still using WordPress 5.7, even though I’ve already updated.

Some help would be much appreciated.

For creating and using WebP images, please have a read of https://make.wordpress.org/core/2021/06/07/wordpress-5-8-adds-webp-support/

As far as I can tell support for WebP images should be enabled in ImageMagick and/or GD PHP extensions to make this work.
WordPress is unable to process WebP images if ImageMagic or GD don’t support that.
You need to discuss this issue with your hosting provider and enable support for WebP images in PHP.

Thanks for the quick reply. I’ll look into that.

    Hello,
I was able to upload webp images on 5.7x, but after upgrading to 5.8 I receive the same error “This image cannot be processed by the web server. Convert it to JPEG or PNG before uploading.”

ImageMagick shows webp support is compiled in?

    Active editor	FooGallery_Thumb_Image_Editor_Imagick
    ImageMagick version number	1690
    ImageMagick version string	ImageMagick 6.9.10-68 Q16 x86_64 2021-02-24 https://imagemagick.org
    Imagick version	3.4.4
    File uploads	Enabled
Max size of post data allowed	290M
Max size of an uploaded file	285M
Max effective file size	285 MB
Max number of files allowed	20
    GD version	bundled (2.1.0 compatible)
GD supported file formats	GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, XPM
Ghostscript version	Unable to determine if Ghostscript is installed

I’m able to view webp images previously uploaded before 5.8 also. The uploader is just preventing me from uploading any further.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

Same problem here. I was on 5.7 and I modified the functions.php to allow webp uploads and it worked fine. Now I’m on 5.8 and I get:

This image cannot be processed by the web server. Convert it to JPEG or PNG before uploading.

I restored the original unmodified functions.php and I have the same issue.

It’s not a ImageMagick and/or GD PHP extension issue.

Hi, anyone have any success fixing this?

Yes, I fixed this yesterday by making sure I had the imagick library installed (it was), and simply rebooting the server.
