New images that are uploaded to my site are being VERY compressed, to the point that some of them look horrible. This is only affecting new images that are uploaded, not older images.

I tried disabling every plugin on my site and I also tried a different theme, but any new image I upload is still over-compressed.

I looked at the dates on my posts and the first post where the images are being over-compressed is from Feb 18th, the same day WordPress released their latest update.

  • Chris,

Do you have a link to a specific post/page showing this? Even better, would you possibly have a before/after I could check out?

I did a quick look in the changelog, but I didn’t see anything that jumped out that might have caused it.

Here’s my last post. I’ve been slacking lately. I have another in draft where the compression on the image looks even worse. If you got to any of my previous posts there’s no noticiable compression/pixilation on the images at all. Also I just checked with my host and there have been no recent changes to ImageMagic or GD on their end.

To be honest, the images look to be compressed about the same to me.

If you go into Settings > Media, what are the sizes you have set there?

Also, are you editing the images to size them beforehand?

Could you possibly take the same screenshot, with the two images side-by-side like I did?

This is strange! The compression appears to only be on my end. The image in your screenshot looks fine. So what would cause chrome to compress images as they’re displayed…but only certain images?

Maybe just a clear history an cache will fix it.

I size everything to the size I need before uploading and have WP set to not resize/create additional sizes.

Have you tried another browser? If it works fine in a different browser, you might try disabling any Chrome extensions you have running to see if that changes things.

Same problem in IE. I cleared the history and it fixed the problem in both browsers. Looks like it was some sort of weird caching problem.
