• Hi –
I am having trouble with getting error 404 to work.

I have WP installed in a subdirectory with index.php at the top level. So :
    mydomain.com
    mydomain.com/WPblog

I did this as recommended by several sites, for security.
so that the wp-admin is not at the top level.

    My problem is twofold:

    1. The permalinks only work with mydomain.com/index.php/pagename

I tried talking to host and work arounds galore – no solutions.
I am sortof ok with this, but

    2. Error 404

this works if you type in a page within the WP blog are.

    eg: mydomain.com/WPblog/somethingNonsensehere
will generate the correct wordpress 404 page.

    However at the top level,

mydomain.com/somethingNonsensehere will go to an Access forbidden page.

Again, talked to host and they said it’s a wordpress issue.

I have tried all kinds of things with .htaccess and none work.

    Any help really appreciated. Thanks

Check your “WordPress address (URL)” and “Site address (URL)” under Settings > General.

WordPress address (URL): the address you want people to type in their browser to reach your WordPress site. It should include the http:// part and should not have a slash “/” at the end

Site address (URL): the address where your WordPress core files reside. It should include the http:// part too. Do not put a slash “/” at the end.
