• I upgraded to WordPress 3.3.1 (from 3.3) and did not have any problems. After updating some of the plugins, I was informed that that the Admin drop-down menu’s are not working anymore. Unfortunately, I am not sure which plugin update caused this problem.

    I have tried to go back to an earlier version of the database, WordPress, deactivating/deleting plugins, and everything else I could find on forums, documentation, etc, but am not having any luck.

    I have a site with the same version of WordPress and plugins, and am not having problems with the Admin drop down menu’s on that site. I tried to test the not working database on this server, but I am having problems importing the database with PHPMyAdmin.

    We were also informed by the hosting provider that Version 3.2.1 WordPress websites were hacked 1 February 2012, but they are not providing any more information. Although this hack should not have affected WordPress 3.3.1, possibly it did.

    Does anyone have any ideas of what may be causing this problem?

  • Have you tried to deactivate all of them and activate one at time to see which one is causing the problem.

    We have tried deactivating/deleting plugins one-by-one, and still no luck.

    What is strange is that even after deleting everything on the server and going back to an older backup (WP 3.3, which was definitely clean), we still have the problem drop-down and fly-out menu’s not working — also editing buttons for posts.

    I’m wondering if there is anything that was done done on server by the hosting provider.

    Does anyone have any clues on what to check?

    Thanks for your input @govpatel.

    I think I may have found the problem.

    I had a clean WordPress site with only a copy of wp-content and the database on another hosting provider and do not have the problem with drop-down, fly-out menu’s and editing buttons for posts, so I compared the file listings.

    There was a file named .htsuphp that I have no idea how it got on the server.

    Here is the contents of the file:
    magic_quotes_gpc=on
    magic_quotes_runtime=on
    mbstring.func_overload=4

    I am wondering if we were hacked. What is strange is that this file appears to have been on the problem server for quite some time (I scanned other backups), and only recently caused problems.

    Any ideas how this file got there and if there is any way we can prevent this happening again?
