I have 2 existing sites, [http://www.simonglish.com](http://www.simonglish.com) and [http://www.senseisan.com](http://www.senseisan.com) (Both a mess) I’d like to try it out as it seems a better way to go than trying to figure out php and css on dreamweaver 8… (although I am somewhat of a beginner here too.) I am hesitant to install wordpress (and xampp) on my c drive as I am worried to change my existing settings especially between dw & php. (I’m currently using xp pro) 1. will xampp install without upsetting my existing settings? 2. should I install on a new drive? 3. My host sux (action hosting) would it be better to setup on a local host (on a separate drive) through the developers guide? One is a publishing tool, a CMS* if you wish, the other is webpage maker thing. They are not “interchangeable”… conf. use WP“ over” DW. * Your tags: xampp vs. (spelling: versus; Latin) DW. Again, xampp is a webserver application, making it easy to run Apache, PHP, MySQL on a Win box, and testing locally PHP scripts. DW, as we already clarified, is a web designer tool. * For me, none of your questions make sense. You can have a million design tools installed, and you can have xampp installed. What do they have to do with each other??? Now I’m running php scripted& configured to run in concert with apache, dreamweaver and mysql. If I try to download php again either binary or xampp, will it conflict with my existing setup? I now understand, after having spoken to Bluehost, that I can do the whole thing (WP) on a remote server, however, I would prefer to use a local server. How would apache handle that? (for example). Dreamweaver is WYSIWYG/text editor for making websites, and as such, PHP cannot really be“ configured” to work with it. I design/plan my themes (sometimes blogs) on a local xampp – and I publish ALL my blogs from ‘remote servers’, aka hosts. Probably I’ll use a combination of both for now… I’m kinda used to dw at least in terms of basic design… I can see the day, however, that I get away from dw all together. Whats the difference? Typically ‘Designers’ create web page designs to have them chopped up and sliced into scripted web pages by software engineers and web developers that create websites. * I.e. WordPress theme developers typically create there designs as html pages, something Dreamweaver is good at. You can hit the ground running visualizing html fonts sizes, colors, css settings in the ‘approximation’ WYSIWYG editor ( not perfect, but faster then going about it blindly or by one edit/upload/download/ browser refresh at a time). * Once a Designer’s web page is sliced up into scripted files for dynamic functionality( a WP’s theme files header.php, footer.php, index.php for example) its difficult to turn back. But if you are a Dreamweaver user, try ThemeDreamer for WordPress, you can then open up your theme files directly in Dw and use it for design.
