    I am getting the error:

Wordfence Live Activity: Notice: An unexpected error occurred.

I ran the connectivity tester in WordFence and everything passed. I made no changes to the site, WordPress or other plugins and I just started receiving this error in live traffic.

What could be the problem and solution? I’m a paid user of WordFence 6.0.20.

The Wordfence Live Activity box can pick up warnings or errors from other plugins or the WordPress core — the message you’re seeing is probably from checking for WordPress updates. If you know where to find the site’s error log, you may see a longer message that gives more detail about the problem. The full error in your case is probably:

Notice: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to WordPress.org. Please contact your server administrator.)

Most of the time, that means that wordpress.org is actually having a temporary problem, or your server is very busy (especially on shared hosting if one of the sites is under attack), so the connection that is checking for updates has timed out.

If it keeps happening for multiple days, then there might be an issue, but it’s likely that the host or wordpress.org has already fixed the issue.

The problem was occurring a day before I posted and is still happening. What is the proper procedure to debug this error?

I see this morning the error is gone. Thanks for your prior explanation, and I consider this issue resolved.

    Great, thanks for the reply!

Depending on the site’s settings, it can take a day or more for the last warning message to be replaced sometimes.

For anyone else who finds this post in the future for a similar problem — if you do have the same warning consistently, you may need to check with your host about connections made from your server to wordpress.org, and at times it may mean that the server is too busy to keep up with the load.
