Hi, Wordfence has been working and I’ve been pleased it’s been able to block a lot of crawler traffic, but it’s been getting slower and slower at refreshing the blocked IP lists and live traffic. Now I can’t get the blocked IPs list to show at all (is it because it’s trying to fill in the count data?). It just says ‘Wordfence working…’ forever. It has worked previously (although slowly).

This particular little site is apparently on some kind of bot network which means it gets a massive amount of traffic from crawlers – which I’m trying to remove.

What I really want is just a plain list of IPs that have been blocked/throttled, so that I can block them permanently – or alternatively a button which says ‘Block them all forever’.

It would also be a lot easier if the page didn’t refresh every time I clicked it (makes it so slow!). Could we have an option for manual refresh instead?

Is there any other reason the page loads might be this slow?

    Many thanks.

    Hi,

Please check your browser’s javascript console for errors when the list doesn’t appear.

    Which browser are you using?

    Hi Mark

No JS errors. I’m using Chrome.

The list is finally appearing today however, after ~1min 40s. But when I click ‘Make permanent’ on a IP it goes to ‘Wordfence is working’… timed it for 3 min and still waiting…

Okay, I went away and came back, and the list has finally refreshed – plus it’s now showing a error:
    POST http://[SITE]/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php 404 (Not Found) load-scripts.php?c=1&load%5B%5D=jquery-core,jquery-migrate,utils,json2&ver=3.8.1:5

And again, on clicking ‘make permanent’:
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found) http://[site]/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php

No obvious difference in trying it with FF…

I’d love to be able to just archive all the IPs I’ve permanently blocked, to stop them clogging up this list – or move them to a separate tab..?

    Many thanks

Can you tell me how many IP’s we’re talking about?

    Thanks.

Many! Without counting (taking too long to load) I would guess somewhere between 30 and 50 crawlers in the list now. It’s very bizarre…

Is that more than this programme can deal with?

Only 50 IP addresses? That’s not much at all. We have customers with thousands. So the number of IP’s isn’t the issue I don’t think.

Are any other functions slow on your site? How long does the page take to refresh when you publish a post?

    Regards,

    Mark.

That’s good – I thought it was strange!

Everything else is normal speed. Page updates refresh within a second or so.

Active plugins: Audio Player, Google Calendar Events, Limit Login (which I could probably remove now)

No JS errors, but any other debugging worthwhile?

    Thanks

The update interval is set at the default 2s – shall I try a different number?

    (@mmaunder)

    Hi,

What is “update interval” set to on the bottom of your Wordfence options page?

    Mark.

Hi – i have the same symptom – page not loading!!
got lots of access attempts yesterday ( I had to turn off the email notification as my email was beeping every 30 seconds!!

I counted the rows on wfBlocks and there are 2800+ rows, last one was about 2 hours ago.

On JS console error is as follows:
    2
Uncaught RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded load-scripts.php?c=1&load%5B%5D=jquery-core,jquery-migrate,utils,json2&ver=3.8.1:3

Sorry about the delayed response. Did you get this resolved?

Hi, not quite resolved as such, but it’s not bothering me quite as much.

It’s working but still painfully slow loading the lists (usually over a minute).

However, I’ve changed the blocking time to 30 days, which gives it a little more breathing room. Plus, it seems that most of the entries are now permanently blocked, so I seem to have got to most of them… it would still be nice if it moved these to a separate list though!

At least it’s blocking all this crazy crawler action, so that’s good! Helps to relieve the load on my server somewhat πŸ™‚

    Thanks

OK thanks for the update. I’ll see if we can optimize this. I do have an issue filed to look at this.

    Thanks Mark!

I’m grateful for your help – and for the plugin! πŸ™‚

i had similar issue. WF ‘working….’ – sometimes hung the whole wp-admin console and had to exit and re-login.

This was on a ‘free’ aff. site from blowdaddy. setup round about the same time they ‘re-located’ or ‘upgraded’ their servers several months ago.

After a couple of trouble shooting calls with GD support, I pulled the plug. Changed Hosts and not 1 problem since.

    Hi there
although the above posts are old I am tagging on to this as well, as I have had no response from the thread I started myself with the same problem.

On the 28th July I had 9,550 email alerts of attempted log ins.
    Since then
    * my site has been extremely slow
    * most of the time it bumps me off with the error: Error Establishing Data Connection
(whether I am in the front or backend and whether I am logged in or not
    * I cannot access my blocked IP’s, and as posters above I wait minutes for it to try to download the blocked IP’s and in the end I get a blank page. I do have hundreds of blocked IP’s
    * On some occassions I get a message: no IP’s are blocked
Is it possible I have been hacked or is this an ongoing Wordfence issue?
Is someone able to help me out here?
    thank you in advance
