• Hi all

I need some advice on our eccommerce product category navigation structure.

We have 4 top level categories on the website and then 7-8 sub product categories off of these.

The question i have is this currently if you click the top level category it displays all products within the sub categories below should i remove this link am i messing up the structure by allowing this?

    Any advice is welcome

    Thanks

    Hey there!

As long as you’re happy with the structure of the categories, you don’t need to change anything. However, you might want to consider how those products are displayed by going to Customize > WooCommerce > Product Catalog and then looking at options for category display:

    Hi Hannah

    Thank you for this.

Having looked at the site again i think it is best to remove these URL’s as i don’t think it works for the user experience displaying all the products from the sub categories.

If i remove this link what type of redirect should i set up?

    Hey there!

It sounds like you’re referring to these:

It comes down to personal preference. When browsing websites, I personally love having that level of detail available. Some people prefer to show content by category on the category page, or filter it using filters. There isn’t one best way.

    Hi Hannah

Yes if you click the top level ‘Outdoor lighting’ it displays all products in the sub cats below so it shows all products which may not point customers to the exact product type they are searching for where as if they click the sub cats it takes them to just that product group which is much more targetted to what they are looking for.

I am just worried that if i remove the link to the ‘outdoor lighting’ display ‘all’ page i am going to mess up the SEO and if i do remove this link if this is what you advise what type of redirect do i use?

I hope you understand what i am saying

    Hey there,

If you choose not to keep the links in the navigation, do make sure the products are available on the product category pages. In that way, the products will still be available for SEO.

I’m afraid I’m not much of an expert in SEO, so I’ll leave this thread open in case any one else would like to chime in.

    Hi Hannah

Yes all products are available in the product sub categories below the top level cat.

I am sure it is not good for the SEO having this top level cat displaying all products in the sub cats but i am very nervous to remove this link.

If there is anyone out there that can confirm yes or no, i am scared i will ruin any SEO work if this link is removed.

I’ll leave this thread open for a bit to see if anyone else can chime in. Otherwise, I’d recommend doing some more research on SEO.
