woocommerce basket not showing products and cart not showing in menu

Hi, Ive added woocommerce to my site. Ive done this with another site using same theme and it works. I have checked the settings and added cart to be shown in menu but it does not appear. Also with a test product, when i add to basket it says added to basket but nothing shows in basket. i have assigned the basket page in settings as i had to create it as woocommerce did not autmatically create it. Any help please.
