I am setting up a store for my client and need help, I’m like pulling my hair out over here! First I want to set up taxes for the store and was going to use the automated taxes options, provided by Woocommerce services by enabling it through jetpack. I did that and it’s fine BUT when I go to the option to set where it “Calculates Tax Based On” -either customer shipping, customer billing or store origin IT greys out on customer shipping address. Not only that but every other option I choose freezes and greys out. I live in Chicago, IL which is an origin-based state for taxes…so I don’t think basing it on where the Customers shipping is correct!?! I also watched tutorials and in all, I saw no one else was having a problem changing this info when the Automated Taxes was enabled.

I also am wondering do I need to set up any tax rate of 7.25% (store tax rate) for all of IL or is that supposed to be automatically handled? And what is the deal off for some reason someone buys something out of state?! what gets charged then? I don’t trust this plugin, can someone let me know if this is how it is supposed to work?

  • I am also setting up a store with Woocommerce. I don’t use the Jetpack and I don’t have any issue with setting the “Calculate tax based on”. I can any option from the drop down menu. I am testing TaxJar and they have pretty good documentation at https://support.taxjar.com/category/230-sales-tax-101. FYI, I don’t work for TaxJar.

This forum is for supporting the WooCommerce core plugin, so its unlikely you’ll get support for JetPack here. It will have its own support forum elsewhere.

I would say though if JetPack is working as you describe – ie not working, run the startup wizard again to disconnect it from your system. The WooCommerce core plugin should be able to manage your tax setup nicely.

So, set Calculate tax based on = Shop base address

In the standard rates table under the tax settings tab, you’ll need just one line:
    * * * * 7.25 Tax

What this line means is that it will catch your shop base address and charge everyone 7.25%. If I have misunderstood IL tax requirements please come back. You’ll have to refer to your local tax authority for requirements.

For sure, but the problem was inside Woocommerce itself. I guess it would be a Woocomerce service plugin error but that plugin can only be activated correctly if working with jetpack. I deleted the whole thing (jetpack and woo services) because it was dumb and wouldn’t work in the first place seeing as IL is an origin-based state in how you’re supposed to collect for taxes.

I am just wondering If I apply a shipping rate for my client’s store-based location and set that for the US if it will work to keep him compliant. I informed him about the nexus rules and laws that all go with it but not much I can do if he wants to ship out of IL and doesn’t keep track of that himself. Never done this before so wanted to know if I was doing it correctly. I also wanted to know if I am supposed to just have him charge that 7.25% rate even if he ships out of state as well seeing as were origin-based here in IL.
Or should he not be charging any other state taxes at all and only charging that rate in IL. I have a meeting with a tax jar person tomorrow to go over this but yeah…truly confused…

Ah so with what you are saying is don’t even PUT US in there just have it only the 7.25% I get that. I am just worried because if he does for some reason sell up to 100,00$ to a state or make 200 transactions to a state within a year that becomes a nexus?! and I don’t really get that or how he can track that without a plugin. I don’t really know what to say to him if he does decide to sell the national route. But if Origin based in IL truly means everything runs through the store locations tax rate no matter where it is ordered or shipped to then what you said and proposed is correct.

Thank you so much for the awesome answer, it really helped! Also, I know this isn’t the place, but which forum can I find plugins for wholesale options on Woocommerce? Is there any special plugins you may recommend handling having a B2C store for parents and students to purchase custom jackets, patches, and graduation gear ALSO while having a wholesale option for Administrators and Schools to have price discounts and bulk ordering. I saw The Wholesale suite, Woocomerce Protected Catagories, Or someone told me to just make user roles and then make coupons for price breaks but that doesn’t seem the best. I would like an option for logins and a Wholesale portal. They will be the same products and items just one is discounted and bulk ordered by the wholesale clients. If you have any experience in that let me know otherwise I will try my best to poke around on the forum. Thanks!!!

I don’t think the forum can or should help with what the rules are for your state. The rules have got to come from your local tax office. All the forum can do is comment on how to implement those rules inside WooCommerce. Tax based on shop base address is the easiest method.

I don’t know of a plugin or extension. Look at:
    wordpress.org/plugins
    woocommerce.com
    codecanyon.net

Someone else may have a better answer if you give it a day or so.

    Hey @hopetaylor,

One way to handle wholesale prices is through WooCommerce Memberships. The memberships plugin allows you to create as many different membership levels as you need. Each level can have its own pricing rules. You can make a level for each wholesale customer if you wanted to or group them by similar pricing ranges.

But they can automatically give logged in members a discounted price while regular customers get the full price.

If you have any questions, let me know.

    Cheers,

To answer the original poster’s question, which no one else did…when automated tax is chosen, ALL OTHER OPTIONS ARE DISABLED. This is by design.
