As of WordPress 5.0, the editor for posts has been updated to a block editor. This block editor is also used for all “custom post types” (products are an example of this). There are a few problems with WooCommerce 3.5.0 or older. Updating to 3.5.1 or higher will fix these.

WordPress 5.0 is currently scheduled for release on November 27, but this is subject to change.

    What’s still working

Pretty much everything on your site will still be working as it should.

    • Customers will still be able to purchase products
    • Your shop will look fine (if your theme is ready for the new block editor, which our Storefront is)
    • You’ll still be able to see all the product details

    What’s not working

If you’re using WooCommerce 3.5.0 or older, there will be a few challenges.

    1. Product categories and product tags are not visible. While they still will be visible for your customers, you won’t be able to change this on the product overview. You can still do this via All Products > Bulk Actions > Edit.

    2. Changing the product type might result in the product data not displaying consistently. Clicking on the new product type twice will normally allow you to still change it, but it’s not a great process.

    3. The product short description and the reviews on the product edit aren’t working. While reviews can still be managed under Comments, there’s no fix for the short description issue.

    Missing short description:

    No reviews visible:

If you’re using WooCommerce 2.6.14 or older, the above aspects won’t be a problem but you’ll have an error displayed on the product page saying something like: Warning: sizeof(): Parameter must be an array or an object that implements Countable in /app/public/wp-content/plugins/woocommerce-2.6.14/templates/single-product/meta.php on line 26

    How can this be addressed

All of these challenges can easily be addressed by doing either of these two suggestions, although we highly advise opting for the first one:

    1. Update to WooCommerce 3.5.1+.
    2. Alternatively, and we advise you to only consider this method if you have a strong reason not to update to the latest version of WooCommerce, add this snippet to disable the block editor for products only. Add it to the functions.php file of your child theme.
