Woocommerce 4.91 and shortcodes

I’ve been using shortcodes on a number of pages to display products in the middle of a page of text content.

With the recent update to Woocommerce 4.9, those shortcodes aren’t working properly anymore.

This code used to display four items in a horizontal row:
products category=”liveroir” per_page=”4″ columns=”4″ orderby=”rand” order=”rand”]

This morning, it was instead displaying seven rows of four items each.

I’ve tried editing the shortcodes and replacing it with something simpler.

This code displayed twenty eight items: [products limit=”4” category=”liveroir”]

This code should show four items: [products limit=”4”]

Instead, it displayed fifty two items – thirteen rows of four each:

Have shortcodes changed in Woocommerce 4.9? I can’t find any documentation to suggest that.

For now, I’ve removed all of the shortcodes from my site, but I’d like to put them back if I can get them to work.

Upon checking your shortcode, I can see that the issue is that you are using a different type of quotation mark (” ”) rather than the single one (' ') or the double one (" ").

Please modify them so that your shortcode can render as expected. 🙂

Changing double quotes to single quotes makes no difference and produces exactly the same results.

I copied and pasted each of your shortcodes above with no editing or changes.

The first one that you suggested displayed 7 rows of 4 items each – 28 items total.
The second one that you suggested displayed 7 rows of 4 items each – 28 items total.

This was working correctly until the recent update to WC 4.9.

I see! this is strange. It sounds like this probably is caused by a conflict with your theme or with another plugin.

The best way to determine this is to:
- Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
- Repeat the action that is causing the problem
If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

Before you start
1. First, please make sure you have a good backup in place of your full site and database. Most hosting companies have this included in the subscription, but you could also consider using a service like Jetpack. If something goes wrong, it’s nice to know that you can restore your site.
2. Second, I would suggest installing a plugin called Health Check & Troubleshooting. This is a plugin developed by the WordPress community and it allows you to disable plugins without affecting your current site visitors.

I did that. The problem persists.

It’s a problem with the Woocommerce core plugin. The problem started with the update to version 4.9.

As of version 4.9.2, the problem is still there.

I’ve checked on my end and I couldn’t replicate the issue.

Let’s check if there is an error on the WooCommerce Log. Please share a copy of the fatal error log found under WooCommerce > System Status > Logs (if available)

I didn’t realize you were looking for a reply from me. The last time I looked, there was no request for further input from me. Apparently, that’s been edited to ask for the error log.

The log is no longer available.

EDIT: I just tried recreating the problem by adding [products limit=”4”] to my home page.

It listed 60 items, rather than the requested four.

No error log was generated from this.

Problem resolved – it was a plugin called Grid/List View for WooCommerce.

That one is supposed to change the number of items that appear in the store, but it was affecting widgets, as well.
