Support » Plugin: User Menus - Nav Menu Visibility » Wishlist: Add ability to disable menu

  • Resolved thomasprice61

Nice plugin. Just wondering if I can add to the wishlist?
Your plugin allows us to control a menu item: either hide it or enable it.
There are UX advantages if there was a 3rd option: to show but disable the menu item.

An example of this is at (free membership). When you logon, some menu’s are shown but disabled (you need a premium subscription to enable them).

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

@thomasprice61 – Will definitely add the idea. Need to think about it for a bit to make sure it really fits this plugin as it seems right on the line of what we defined it to do.

Also need to determine how it fits in to existing options without making things complex.

    That said it sounds doable.

Would you want to define an alternate link as well as disable it? Or show some other message?

I will say one possible roadblock is that we don’t add CSS to the pages at all. So this will require adding stylesheets. I’m not sure we are wanting to do such a thing at this time.

My thoughts are the ideal UX would be to disable the link and inform the user why the menu item is disabled.
    1. Disabling the link: technical solutions available.
    2. Make the user aware why the menu item is disabled is more challenging as each scenario may differ. A ‘simple’ solution is add a class (maybe “nav_menu_disabled”), then css can be built to suit the differing scenarios. More sophisticated options could be to trigger a modal popup, or the login screen, or an alternate url, or some other action. As you stated, some of these maybe pushing past the limits of what you are prepared to do with the plugin :).

    regards Thomas
