• I just password protected my wordpress site.

I had it under a directory (not in the root)

    I used a .htaccess file.

At first it wasn’t working, I kept getting a 403 error.

So I did a search on here and read that if i chmod it to 666 it will work, which it did.

But then I was reading about permalinks and such and it not being able to write to the .htaccess file.

Is what I did ok and will my WP site function properly now?

    Thx

  • umm, im just going to pipe in and say one thing:

Regardless of what you are trying to accomplish having an .htaccess on your site thats chmod 666 is nothing short of stupid. I dont care what you read or where.

IF, in fact, you cannot accomplish what you are doing without having your .htaccess being world-writable, then you ought to find another solution.

OK, i lied, I said 2 things. Sue me.

an .htaccess needs to be READABLE. NOTHING ELSE.

So I should chmod it to 644?

    Um…. 6-4-4?

What’s the last bolded line in whooami’s post?

Ya I read the post too quickly – had someone asking me about a coffee table *rolls eyes*

Now that it has been chmod to 644 will it do anything to my Wp site.. ie my permalinks or anything?

Or will everything still function normally?
