Hi – WP 5.0, just downloaded the plugin – Version 4.0.1 – so I have the current version. I did notice the repo says “updated yesterday” – uh oh.

Installed, no errors; clicked the activate and everything seems to happen normally including a message at the top of the plugins page that says “Plugin activated.” However, down the list, that plugin is not ‘blue-ed out” and under that it still says ACTIVATE.

    Tried deleting and reinstalling…no change.

I purged page cache – no joy on that. No other sign that it actually activated. Really wanted to use this…

    Thanks!

  • Check your error_log files.

Yup, same for me. This is the error I got when trying to activate the plugin:

[04-Mar-2019 16:21:53 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7864352 bytes) in /home/****/****/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1479

Also had the same experience with the database not updating. Tried repairing database tables but that didn’t change anything either.

Here is the first part of the error:

[04-Mar-2019 16:17:12 UTC] WordPress database error The size of BLOB/TEXT data inserted in one transaction is greater than 10% of redo log size. Increase the redo log size using innodb_log_file_size.

@citeweb are you running multisite? What version of WordPress?

    Plugin Author John Godley

    (@johnny5)

@michael-king-1 how are you installing the plugin? Do other plugins activate ok?

Not running multi-site. WP version 5.1

Have been using plugin for years. This just started on the latest update. Other plugins are fine.

Plugin installed from Plugin dashboard. Not manually. I’ve tried deleting (from the dashboard) and reinstalling.

Installed the standard way-via dashboard direct from wordpress.org. Nothing special or tricky. This is a mature site so I haven’t needed to install any plugins lately, but I’ll go experiment with one of your competitors. I’ll see about the error log file too, if I can find the password without too much trouble.

@michael-king-1 your error log is likely to show the problem, and it might be something like an out of memory issue.

@citeweb that’s odd. The function being called is in multisite, and would only be used if your site is a multisite or you have the constant WP_CLI defined. Do you happen to have that defined anywhere?

I’m not sure if the other issues are related. The out of memory error is something that can happen when plugins are installed, and can be fixed by increasing your memory allowance (https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/increasing-the-wordpress-memory-limit/)

The MySQL error probably isn’t from Redirection.

Actually, I just realized that we do have WP Staging installed so we do have a development site. Should I update the plugin on the staging site as well then?

    (@johnny5)

Sure, I don’t know what WP Staging does, but it’s worth a try.

WP-Staging creates a staging site under your main site. I’ve deleted the site and now Redirection activation process has started but now I get the following:

Message: No stage found for upgrade convert_existing_urls_400
    Installed: –
    Next: 4.0
    Debug:

    Table “wp_uem8bh_redirection_items” is missing
    Table “wp_uem8bh_redirection_groups” is missing
    Table “wp_uem8bh_redirection_logs” is missing
    Table “wp_uem8bh_redirection_404” is missing
    Stage: convert_existing_urls_400

@johnny5 What error log? Where? All I could find in the server were http/s access error logs all down to malicious bots

@citeweb Nice to know I’m not alone

Well this is embaeassing for me but good news for @johnny5 – I installed a different redirect plugin and got the same wont-activate behavior

I guess I will go bitch at my hosting company, or I don’t know what.

I take it from the lack of response to our issue that we are on our own. Too bad, it was a good plugin up until the upgrade.

    Thanks,

    Steven
