We recommend you to import the site into a clean WordPress installation.

The latest version of the plugin will copy the new website over the old website and replace any overlapping file.
File that do not overlap will be left.
Earlier version of the plugin worked differently by first cleaning the website and then importing the new website content, however, it turned out that most of the users needed the files.
It should not cause any problems by having a few extra files, unless storage space is a problem.

I want to create a wordpress installation for distribution purposes that users can install on their sites but without overwriting their existing plugins, posts, pages etc. Yani mentions that the latest version will do this, but Pim recommends installing in a clean configuration. I’m assuming that this should work correctly but that it isn’t guaranteed to work in all cases. Should I just do thorough testing to see if this will work correctly for me. Thanks.
