Support » Fixing WordPress » Will eliminating image sizes affect WordPress’ ability to serve retina images?

  • Hi, I’m researching ways to make our site retina ready. I keep coming across plugins and advice suggesting that I limit the number of image sizes WordPress creates so that I can save some space after uploading massive @2x files.
But ever since WP 4.4 (I believe), WP serves the appropriate image size for you. So wouldn’t it be a mistake to reduce the number of copies made by WP since the platform uses those images to serve the correct size for different devices? Please excuse my newbie ignorance.

  • With the new editor, the responsive image calculation code was changed, and has a problem. I’m not sure if it got fixed before 5.0, or is coming in one of the next minor releases.
There is also this ticket https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/44441 which is to remove some options for image sizes.

Oh, thank you very much. I did not know that. Guess that’s the benefit of using plugins!
I’m gonna’ check out that link right now. Have a great day/night.
