Support » Networking WordPress » Wildcard SSL Certificate for Multisite Network with separate domains

  • Hello!

First of all, I’m a beginner in multisites.
According to the Topic wildcard-ssl-multisite-and-domain-mapping it would be interesting how to use wildcard ssl for a multisite network.

There are 4 separate Domains which are mapped to the Multisite Network subpages. Free Version of the Plugin Domain Mapping is installed.

    WP-Admin/Websites lists:

    URL: maindomain.com | MAPPED DOMAIN: -
    URL: domain2.maindomain.com | MAPPED DOMAIN: domain2.com
    URL: domain3.maindomain.com | MAPPED DOMAIN: domain3.com
    URL: domain4.maindomain.com | MAPPED DOMAIN: domain4.com

Is there a way to use just one SSL-certificate (wildcard) for all pages, like it is descriped for this premium plugin ssl-domain-mapping, without a premium Plugin? It just seems to me, like this are already subpages, but on the provider side we have separate domains (maindomain, domain2, domain3, domain4).

Not exactly. The SSL certs really are handled at the server level before it gets to WordPress multisite. This is how I set it up in the past.

Setup a virtual host for maindomain.com and *.maindomain.com This will handled all the cases for the left column of your table. That one virtual host will need just one cert (the wildcard one).

Then setup a new virtual hosts for domain2.com, domain3.com, domain4.com etc. and each virtual host will need it’s own certs.

After that WordPress will do it’s thing. It’s potentially more certs but it’s also easier to manage IMHO than one big cert with multiple names on it.
