Support » Plugin: Widget Importer & Exporter » Wie file not importing

Using latest version of your plugin I get the error message “You must upload a .wie file generated by…” I only have the option to upgrade WP to 4.8, which is why I need your plugin to transfer my widget text files to the Classic Text Widget.

I have tried disabling all plugins and the file still does not import.

Thank you for any insight into this.

Here are some things to try.

    1. This can happen if the file is empty or if it does not have a .wie extension so check both possibilities.

    2. Try deactivating all plugins except Widget Importer & Exporter then try importing again.

    3. While all plugins are inactive, try exporting your .wie file again in case a plugin is interfering with its generation. Then, import it.

I need your plugin to transfer my widget text files to the Classic Text Widget.

Note that Widget Importer & Exporter will only import data to the same widget. There is no option to import data from one widget to another, such as from the native Text widget to Classic Text Widget plugins’ widget.

File is full and saved using a code editor

“2. Try deactivating all plugins except Widget Importer & Exporter then try importing again.”
I did that, as I mentioned in my previous request.

“3. While all plugins are inactive, try exporting your .wie file again in case a plugin is interfering with its generation. Then, import it.”
I did that and saved it using several different code editors with WIE extension, same result – error message.

This is what I am trying to achieve.

I understand now that you are editing the .wie file that is exported before importing it. Does the original .wie file import okay when not edited? It’s possible that the edits are creating a problem. It will be good to determine if the issue is with the edits or if the issue is one in general.

Yes, I am editing the .wie file. However the original file without modification, does not upload either. I get the same error message.

Thank you for trying that. Please post the file somewhere for me to download and I will test it so we can see if the issue is related to the contents of the file or your particular installation of WordPress.

The original .wie file is here

Thank you. I was able to import the file without error so the problem likely originates with your specific setup. Can you double-check a test with all plugins deactivated and with the default theme? The plugin tells WP to allow the .wie file type but sometimes other plugins can interfere with that.

If you’re on multisite, go into the setting and try manually adding wie support. There are also some plugins that can help add mime types. It’s worth giving one of those a short to try and force .wie upload support. It shouldn’t be necessary but worth a shot as a last resort.

You might also want to test on a fresh install of WordPress on the same host to determine if this is somehow caused by the hosting environment.
