Hopefully, somebody can walk me through troubleshooting and fixing these issues. Here goes:

We’re running two installs of WP on a single domain.
    First one is at http://www.pjdianagoalieschool.com/main
    Next one is at http://www.pjdianagoalieschool.com/thegoalienet

I’ll refer to the first one as PJDGS. The second is TGN.

On PJDGS, the widgets can’t be moved or changed. When you click on a widget it just highlights blue as you move the cursor. I don’t believe any other functionality is lost, but I can’t say for sure.

On TGN, the ADD MEDIA button does nothing – you can click to your heart’s content. The KITCHEN SINK is not visible at all. You can type in the Headline box, but not in the body copy box.
All other functionality, again, appears to work. I can create posts using the iPhone app, but not from a PC.

The problems are not crossing over from one install to the other.

I’ve gone through all of the suggested tweaks and fixes but nothing has worked. I even had a savvy friend check it out and run through the various potential fixes – still nothing.

I’m stumped – and growing concerned.

I have two other WP sites up and running (each on unique domains – samboney.com and delawarevalleyvoodoo.com) and neither of them have these issues.

Please help if you can. Bear in mind, I’m not a coder or ultra savvy user. I can futz around and generally find my way to success with guidance.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

Thank you for the quick response.

Yes, we tried deactivating plugins and reactivating them and could not isolate a problematic plugin. I tried even deleting oddball or suspect plugins to see if one of them was causing a problem. Still not luck.

Tried the default theme. That didn’t work either. We updated exisiting themes with no luck.

I haven’t tried the resetting plugins thing – first I’ve heard of that one. I will give that a go.
    UPDATE:
Just tried resetting the plugins. That did not solve the issues.

I haven’t done the complete reload, because, well – I’m scared. There are a lot of files and posts and videos on the TGN side and I’m afraid to lose months of work. Also, I’m not real strong on how to “install” WP manually and get all of the databases, passwords, etc. correct. I use GoDaddy to install WP. It handles all of that scary stuff for me.

I’m afraid to lose months of work

All of your site’s content is in your database – not in files. The only exceptions are uploaded media files stored in wp-content/uploads. So as long as you avoid the wp-content folder, you’ll be fine. This is just a set of fresh core files – not a re-install.

    OK. Cool, thanks.

What about plugin folders. I have some sophisticated plugins on the TGN side to handle memberships. Will those stay intact as well? (I guess they will, because they’re housed in wp-content.)

And, about getting the database user/pass right on the fresh install? Are there certain lines in certain files that I can copy to a blank document and use to redo the databases?

You are a great help, by the way. I really appreciate this.

All of your plugins will remain intact. As I said this is just a set of fresh core files – not a re-install.

I did the re-install from the wp dashboard.
Now, all I’m getting is “The service is unavailable.”

DISREGARD: Just came back online after 10 minutes. “Patience, young Padwan.”

    I’ll check functionality now.

Gave me: “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete. Please try this again.”

Tried to do it again. Went to 500 error and now back to The service is unavailable.

    So, frustrating.

Site’s back up again, but still with the “failed update” message.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Situation resolved. Thanks.
