Support » Plugin: WP Photo Album Plus » Widgets page can't finish loading in admin

  • Resolved vytaulla51

    Not sure if this is a bug or not, but, I just upgraded to 4.8.11 and it makes my widgets page stop working in the admin. If I deactivate WPPA, the widgets page goes back to normal.

    I’m trying to troubleshoot to see if something else is the problem, but everything else is working. I tried turning off all my plugins and activating/deactivating made no difference, except for WPPA. I tried reinitializing the plugin – no help. I’m wondering if I have a setting conflict somewhere?

    I checked with my host (bluehost) and we upped the memory limits, etc. — no help.

    I have a custom theme, so I activated Twenty Twelve – same issue, when WPPA is activated the widgets page — well, what seems to happen is that it can’t finish loading the page. It loads: Archives, Calendar, Categories, Custom Menu, and Last Ten Photos (all under “Available Widgets”) and then it just seems to cycle for awhile then gives up and stops. It doesn’t finish loading the rest of the widgets page.

    My theme is responsive, if that means anything. The plugin is “working” — we’ve got many albums loaded and they show up and work. Site is –

    I have checked the debugging option in the WPPA settings if that will assist.

    Appreciate assistance and this great plugin!

    I’ve updated to the 4.8.12 which didn’t resolve this problem. But I also noticed that not only won’t the Widgets page finish loading, the WPPA albums edit pages won’t load either. If I try click on the “edit” link for a specific album, the page starts to load but doesn’t finish – it just times out.

    I turned off ALL the plugins on the site, including WPPA, and the widgets page comes up. I activated WPPA ONLY, and the widgets page won’t load. I deactivated WPPA and activated other plugins one at a time and the widgets page loaded until I reactivated WPPA. So something in there is stalling. We have over 400 albums and over 5000 photos – have we reached some kind of limit? The albums are all showing up on site pages, its the admin that’s having problems.

    Thanks for any help –

    In the file wppa.php there is a section where the wppa widgets are loaded:

    require_once 'wppa-potd-widget.php';
    require_once 'wppa-search-widget.php';
    require_once 'wppa-topten-widget.php';
    require_once 'wppa-slideshow-widget.php';
    require_once 'wppa-gp-widget.php';
    require_once 'wppa-comment-widget.php';
    require_once 'wppa-thumbnail-widget.php';
    require_once 'wppa-lasten-widget.php';
    require_once 'wppa-album-widget.php';
    require_once 'wppa-qr-widget.php';

    You may individually disable loading them by putting a double slash in front like:

    // require_once 'wppa-lasten-widget.php';

    This diables the widget, both admin and frontend.

    Try disabling the widgets that you do not use as a temporary solution.
    If there is a specific widget that causes the trouble, pls tell me.

    Nice you turned on debugging, now i need a link to the site to be able to use it…

    I did have the site in the thread but not as a link – sorry! Its at

    I’ll test the widgets as you directed and get back to you – thanks!

    OK, when I disabled all the widgets the widgets page in admin DID load. But, I still can’t open individual albums to for editing. When I click on an “edit” link and the Album Admin, the selected page starts to load but doesn’t complete.

    Went through the widgets one by one.
    Enabled wppa-potd-widget.php — widgets page loaded
    Enabled wppa-search-widget.php too, still loading
    Enabled wppa-topten-widget.php too, still loading
    Enabled wppa-slideshow-widget.php too, and the edit plugins page wouldn’t load. Disabled wppa-slideshow-widget.php again and edit page and widgets page loaded. Left slideshow-widget off, and continued:
    Enabled wppa-gp-widget.php, widgets page loaded
    Enabled wppa-comment-widget.php — widgets page loaded
    Enabled wppa-thumbnail-widget.php and the widgets page loaded the “Available widgets” but not the Inactive Widgets OR the sidebar of widgets actually being used. Disabled it.
    Enabled wppa-lasten-widget.php and widgets page loaded only the first five available widgets, which is what was happening in the beginning. Disabled it.
    Enabled wppa-album-widget.php — widgets page fully loaded.
    Enabled wppa-qr-widget.php — wigets page fully loaded.

    Albums still can’t be edited. The first block of stuff loads: Name, description, Sort# and Parent Album dropdown, but stops there.

    So right now the wppa-slideshow-widget, wppa-thumbnail-widget and wppa-lasten-widgets are disabled.

    Thank You for your help!

    put this line into wp-config.php:

    define('WP_DEBUG', true);

    This will most likely generate usefull errormessages that can help you to find the cause of the problem.

    Hi Opajaap:

    I changed the debug to true, went through plugins, deactivated/reactivated them all and isolated plugins that were generating error and warning messages. All of them that caused errors don’t have updates to 3.5 available so they have been deleted, and some replaced. One in particular, Quick Cache, was a plugin I liked a lot for caching, but it isn’t updated for 3.5 and it generates messages, so I deleted it. I downloaded WP Super Cache since you note that WPPA supports it and my site is no longer generating any error/warning messages – debug is still set to “true”.

    But WPPA admin still doesn’t finish loading. That is, if I select a photo album to edit, it won’t load past the initial section (shows Name, description, Sort order and parent album).

    I had a copy of the wppa stylesheet with some slight changes loaded with my theme and read on your site that I need to remove and replace it. I’ve removed it, but removing it didn’t fix the problem. I went ahead and replaced it and then some of the photos in the parent albums wouldn’t load (on the actual site pages, not in the admin), so I took it back out again and they reappeared. There are a few styles I really NEED to be able to change, but that’s a separate problem.

    Also, the breadcrumbs have reverted back to having duplicate albums appear when I click on the parent album link in the breadcrumbs.

    Something happened in the changes between 4.8.10, when the plugin worked for me, even with un-updated plugins, and 4.8.11 and .12, when it stopped working. I think the problem started with the .11 update and didn’t get any better with .12

    I still have to disable the slideshow, thumbnail and last ten widgets to get the widgets page to fully load.

    I can’t figure out what to do further to troubleshoot this. I mean, the existing albums are loading and showing up from the outside but I can’t edit them in the admin.

    It isn’t a capacity issue is it? We have over 400 albums and over 4,000 photos…?

    Can we communicate privately? Could you login to my admin and see what I mean?
