Sorry, but this is not currently possible.
I have partly succeeded in this using plugin Today’s Date Inserter. The only format I can make work is [todaysdate format=FjS ] – which does not include a space so results in “On this day December18th”

On this day [todaysdate format=F] [todaysdate format=jS] returns “On this day December 18th”
Sorry to do this, however by my testing todays date inserter conflicts with This Day in History, and makes Explanatory Dictionary by the amount you are forward of GMT, so what looked a great solution fails. I was worth a try.
