Support » Fixing WordPress » Why would trackbacks only work using /trackback/ on the post URL?

  • I have a new blog and I’ve been testing trackbacks to it. I’ve found that incoming trackbacks only work if the other blog author used:

My blog will not recognize normal pings using the permalink. It will only notice them if /trackback/ is tacked on to the URL.

Now I know that WordPress is *supposed* to work both ways. Even if you simply reference someone else’s post in your own post, WP will trackback to it. However, not for my blog. People are referencing my articles but not getting the nod on my site.

Can anyone give me any idea why that might be happening? Why /trackback/ works but the permalink does not?

You might want to read up on the differences of trackbacks and pingbacks:

Sometimes, these can get marked as spam. So, check your spam queue.

Also, post URLs. Give examples of where someone has linked to you and the post(s) that they linked to.

I’m a bit farther along than checking the spam queue. The ping never even gets through to WP. If you trackback, as I mentioned, using the trackback URL (which has /trackback/ appended to it), the ping gets through just fine. Use any of my permalinks and you get nothing. Your blog will say “already pinged” but I will never see one piece of evidence at my blog that you tracked back to me.

I have tested this extensively with my other blogs. Feel free to test ping any of my articles using either method. My domain is shown in the URL I posted originally. I just turned on moderation because of this so I’ll see if a ping actually makes it but your trackback won’t actually show up due to moderation.

Thanks for the help. Let me know if you have any insights. You might also want to read my original article about the first half of this problem that was already solved:

Trackback to that one as a test if you want. Try the permalink first and then let me know when your blog says pinged. I’ll check mine.
