Why no www? (8 posts)

    Hi,

Just curious and asking for a client who is very concerned about the lack of www. in his browser bar when he visits his site - why does this vanish nowadays? Obviously when you type it in or click a http://www.etc link it goes to the same place and personally I like it that it's been cleared up as it's redundant (where else but the WWW is a website going to be?!), but just so I can let my client know, why does WP remove it when many other sites do not?

    Thanks!
    Beth

    why does this vanish nowadays

It's simply become more popular to use bare urls (ie without the 'www'). WordPress itself doesn't have a "preference" either way. Nor does it remove the 'www' in any urls. It merely uses the urls as provided in Settings -> General. At the end of that day, it's down to the personal choice of the site owner.

Hmm. Well I've never actively told WP not to display the www so it has done this by default.
If I alter this in the general settings now, will it break anything or can I go ahead?
    Cheers!

so it has done this by default.

I'm sorry but it cannot. Full stop. Check the urls in Settings -> General.

Yep just done that, it says http:// there as I thought. But I have never actively typed this in myself, and when I actually purchased the domain it said www.
    Odd!

Anyway, if I alter this in the general settings now, will it break anything or can I go ahead?
    Cheers!

when I actually purchased the domain it said www

When you registered the domain, you simply registered the bare domain name - eg example.com. And that has no bearing on what was entered into the relevant field when installing WordPress.

    will it break anything

Yes. See Changing_The_Site_URL for details of how to do this correctly.

Jeez, okay well it said it had www in front of it when I bought it, I'm just trying to work out how come it's not there as it has never occurred to me to change it in WP general settings or anywhere else. Must be magic then.

    Thanks for the link.
