Support » Plugin: Google XML Sitemaps » Why is this plugin generating sitemap-index.xml?

  • We are using this plugin, and it generates a nice sitemap.xml

    But it’s also generating a sitemap-index.xml. Why?

(Someone has configured both sitemap.xml and sitemap-index.xml to be crawled in google search console. For whatever reason, the option for a property owner to delete an extraneous sitemap is missing from that search console. But there’s no reason for the site to be crawled twice. So we would like this particular url to generate a 404.)

Looking at AddRewriteRules in sitemap-loader.php I have an inkling of how this might be happening, but is the only way to disable this “feature” going in and manually modifying the sitemap generating code?

  • Yeah, the new google console is such a pain in the ass.
However you could switch back to the old version. There should be a link on the bottom of the left menu bar.

I wouldn’t recommend to alter the plugin code because after a new update your modifications are overridden.

    Hope that helps.

    I wish that helped.

Only one sitemap shows up on the old console, and that’s sitemap.xml — I am reluctant to remove that for the same reason I’m reluctant to change the plugin code.

If anything, changing the plugin code seems safer. (The hope, there, would be that a few 404s or 301 redirects and google would update their dataset to match. If that worked, I wouldn’t have to mess with google search console dysfunctionality.)

That said… it looks like the v3 search console api has a webmasters.sitemaps.delete method, which I can use…
