 * Whenever I enter a link in my WordPress sites using the standard visual editor(
Gutenberg) if I don’t actually enter https:// before the link I find that the
   link defaults to [http://](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/why-does-link-default-to-http-and-not-https/?output_format=md).
Why is this and how do I change it?

 * Check your settings for the project domain under Settings > General. See: [https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/settings-general-screen/](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/settings-general-screen/)–
if there is still an entry without https, change it here.

 * Links may default to “http” instead of “https” because the website you’re linking
to may not have SSL enabled or because the website settings are configured to
   default to “http.”

 * Thanks, but I failed to mention that these are internal links I’m building and
my site in Settings is set to the https not http

 * I have the exact same issue and have had it ever since switching to https a gazillion
years ago. And it’s a pain in the butt, since I use a lot of internal links.

 * I cannot reproduce this on a test web without any plugins and with a standard
theme. The internal links are set and saved with [https://](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/why-does-link-default-to-http-and-not-https/?output_format=md).
 * However, the window showing the link target can be irritating. The protocol is
missing there. In the background, however, the editor works with [https://](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/why-does-link-default-to-http-and-not-https/?output_format=md),
which can be seen both in the code editor view and in the frontend.
 * If this does not work for you, I would recommend deactivating all plugins and
switching to a standard theme. It is possible that one of them is changing the
behaviour of the links. You would be able to find this along the way.
