Why can some widgets only be added to certain sidebars?

    I have two sidebars at heavywinter.com (middle and right columns). In the widgets manager, I can only add certain widgets (like archives and similar posts) to the index page’s middle sidebar. I can’t put them in any of the other page’s middle or right sidebars. Other widgets show the “add” link for all widgets. Is there something special about archives that it can only go on certain pages?

    Upon further exploration, I can add the problem widgets to any of the sidebars in my theme, but only once. If it’s in the middle sidebar on the index page, then I can’t also add it to the middle sidebar for individual pages.
