  • Why are the new versions so slow? Ever since I upgraded to 2.1.2 everything has been so slow to load. I know that it isn’t my host since everything was fine before the upgrades. I only upgraded because of the posts saying that we should upgrade immediately due to a hacker problem. I just upgraded to the new 2.1.3 in hopes that this would be fixed and its even worse. On average the pages within the admin interface are taking 25 +/- seconds to load, the longest wait was over 99 seconds. Like I said, this never happened until I upgraded to 2.1.2. And yes, I upgraded per all instructions, etc. This really needs to be addressed as this is clearly not an isolated case per many other posts of similar nature.

  • I agree 100%, new versions are sloooower.

I don’t know if it is true or not, but it just seems like the developers are so worried about being hacked again that they sacrificed speed.

Doesn’t seem any longer to me. In fact, it’s a lot faster in some parts than 2.0.x was.

I’d say that you have some sort of specific issue causing your site to be slower.

my site itself isn’t bad on speed, its the admin sections that are much much slower. Also, this is happening with many other people.

And it’s not happening with many, many more people.

Again, I think it’s something specific to your site that’s causing the slowdown that you are seeing.

i’m sorry, but by doing a search for “slow” or other such keywords you’ll find several topics on this…

any ideas as to what could doing this?

Not without more information about exactly what you’re seeing. So far, you’ve just said that the admin pages are “slow”. What’s slow about them? Load time? Is there anything more specific you can give us? Do you see pages appear slowly? Is there any specific page that is slower than others? Is there any specific page that’s *not* slower? Do you have any plugins? Have you tried disabling them and seeing if there is a difference?

Generic problems like “it’s slow” are not going to get much of a response. Specific issues will help people narrow down the problems.

One of the first things I would try, optimize your database.

    Thread Starter Kahil

    (@kahil)

i’ve optimized my database, disabled all unnecessary plugins and scripts, etc… that didn’t work…

when i first upgraded to 2.1.3, I only uploaded the updated files. but that wouldn’t explain it happening in 2.1.2 when I did a full upgrade on that… I’ll let y’all know if I can pinpoint more about this.

    Thanks!

I have two identical Wp 2.1.3 installations: same files, same plugins, same DB, same number of posts – the second is a “copy” of the test setup on the first server.
The test is relatively fast. The other one is awfully slow. Now, the main difference when looking at the phpinfo:
    – the faster testsite uses Apache
    – the slow site uses CGI
(to be exact, in the Server API line one has “Apache” the other “CGI”)

    Could that be the reason?

Well, CGI would be slower than using mod_php or something like that, yes.

I have figured it out. It has to do with the Dashboard. The div sections that import those three feeds are slowing it down so much. As soon as I removed the divs that do that from the index.php file in wp-admin, things are only taking a second or two to load.

In all honesty, you don’t need those sections. If you want to keep updated, just bookmark to them or subscribe to their feeds with a reader.

It’d be nice as well if there was a WordPress Lite or something. Just a toned down version that is as minimal on scripts and feeds, etc.

Try this plugin, I use it to great success: http://cjbehm.dyndns.org/wingingit/dashboard-options/

The div sections that import those three feeds are slowing it down so much.

Uh, no, that was one of the biggest speedups in WordPress 2.1. Because now those DIVs are loaded after the page itself, via AJAX. Thus they are separate calls that only show up after the main page itself is displayed.

    Thread Starter Kahil

    (@kahil)

Ummm..Yes Otto42. Do you have any explanation as to why when those sections were on there, my dashboard would take over a minute to load? Then once I removed them it loaded within 2 seconds? I tried putting those sections back just to test if it was a coincidence or not. Sure enough, once they were back it was slow again.

Face it, there is a bug somewhere in these newer versions that is causing WordPress to become very slow. Do a search on this here and you will find an ever growing number of posts and threads on this.
