Why are product variations not assigned to product categories like the parent product is? Each product variation entry should be able to link back to the category or categories that the parent product uses so that filtering by category works not only with products but with product variations too.

If the parent product’s categories change, update any product variations as well. This shouldn’t be that complicated to program…

So, why doesn’t WooCommerce work this way? Is there a way to filter product variations by product category?

    Hi there,
WooCommerce only allows you to assign categories at the product level, not the variation level.

However, variations are determined by Attributes so you can use them to create product Archives (like category pages) but for Attributes.

When you create the Attribute you can Enable Archive for the Attribute which will then create an archive page for each term of that Attribute, so in effect much like Categories.
In effect it means that you can have a page that shows all products with that term of that attribute.
You can also filter by attribute term.

I hope that helps you to figure it out.

That’s really poor database design. Product variations are products. They should be linked in the database the same way products are so that their product category information is easily accessible.
