Support » Fixing WordPress » Why are my private pages visible?

  • I haven’t attended my fledgling websites for a year (had a bereavement), and I had left them marked private. But I when I typed in one URL today the website was found and was visible – before I logged in.

I logged in and found that all the pages were marked private, so I’m baffled. I upgraded WP to the latest version. I searched this forum and subsequently cleared the cache in WP and on my browser. I logged out. The site is still visible.

The same thing is happening with another site I have in development – even my son can see it on his computer – clearly not logged in. There is even a page visible that is no longer available to me as an administrator or by any navigation from the dashboard.

What’s this all about? Please can someone help me make my pages private until I want the world to see them?

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Thanks for the quick response.

Deactivating all the plugins made no difference.
I reset the plugins folder by FTP and that made no difference either.

I made sure to log out each time before testing if the pages were visible.

The sites are both add-on domains so I did the plugin deactivate/reset for the main domain too.

    Still an issue.

    Can we see these sites?

    Here’s one of them:

    I’m seeing:

    Nothing Found

Apologies, but no results were found for the requested archive. Perhaps searching will help find a related post.

plus three images. There’s a menu link to a contact page but that’s just taking me a a 404 page. So I can’t actually see any of your site’s content other than those 3 images.

Are you perhaps viewing the site whilst you are logged in?

I’m not logged in and you can see exactly what I can see. But the front page with my banner and the contact page are marked private – so shouldn’t you just get a 404 from the start?
I trashed the page with the images a year ago and it’s not available to me when i log in to trash ‘again’, though the images are in the media bank.

Grateful for your help – thank you -but I don’t understand why anything is visible if it’s marked private.

Struggling with the private pages myself.
Seems like the private page is visible if it has children pages. Or have had children.
    Try this:

    1. create a private page
    2. log out
    3. try to access the page – guess it gives a 404
    4. log in and turn the page to Public
    5. create a private page with the former page as parent
    6. turn the parent back to Private and log out
    7. access the child page – 404
    8. access the parent – visible

There is an open ticket addressing problems with private pages, .

The link to the ticket disappeared when posting. Here it is:
    Ticket #8592
