why are my catagoy and author pages looking funky

this is my first wp site…
first created the theme in artisteer and then I widget-ed away to make the site more workable for the friend/client but when I click the “permalinks” (author) loculus and (category) news the pages look like this
how can I fix this? so far as I can tell it might have something to do with the loop.php file… but I’m not sure.
