We are needing to move a whole lot of images and files from an existing site to our new WordPress site. Is there a way to make the files immediately available in the Media Library, without having to upload each one of them?
    Thank you.

    No.

However, the newer Flash uploader will let you upload multiple images at once. Just select more than one image in the file selection box.

Also, if you’re importing from another WordPress site, it can grab the images and import them along with the other stuff.

    Thank you for your response.
    It confirms my suspicions.

We are migrating from Joomla, so, no luck there.

I will look into the Flash solution.
When you say “newer Flash uploader”, which version of Flash are you talking about?

Actually, I’m speaking of a version of WordPress.

WordPress 2.5 revamped the uploader system, and includes a new Flash-based uploader in it. That uploader and WordPress can deal with multiple files.

Also, you might look for a solution that works via XML-RPC. WordPress can receive file uploads through that, so there may be third party software capable of uploading your files that way.

    We have version 2.5.1.

I tried what you suggested – in Add Page, I went to Insert Image and then browsed and tried to select more than 1 file.
I tried using the conventional “hold down the shift key while you select on images you want” – did not work.
Then I tried that with the ctl key and the alt key – still no luck.

Is 2.5.1 not offering the Flash uploader?

2.51 does indeed offer the Flash uploader and it works just fine.

If you see a single button on the image screen that says “Choose Files to upload”, then that’s the Flash version. If you see a field for the filename with a Browse and Cancel button/link, then that’s not it and that means that your browser does not have the correct version of Flash to allow it to work properly, or you have a plugin disabling or interfering with the Flash object.

    Thanks, again.
The Flash Player was not installed in my browser, and, once it was, I can do the multiple file upload!

    I’m confused.

How do you determine if there is a plugin disabling or interfering with the Flash object? why would this be happening?

I seem to have the same problem, have updated Flash PLayer, but still doesn’t work. any further advice?
