Who owns my blog? (8 posts)

    Hi everyone,

I'm considering starting a blog soon using WordPress to build my posts and hosting it elsewhere. After reading "Blogging for Dummies", reading up on Canada's and the US' copyright laws and a smattering of forum posts, I still can't figure out: if I use WordPress or another blogging tool, do I own the intellectual property rights to my content? Can anyone else claim ownership to my posts?

I appreciate your help on this. My blog may end up helping me professionally so I do worry that there's a line of text in some legal document claiming when I clicked "I Accept" I gave up all my content.

do I own the intellectual property rights to my content?

    Yes

Can anyone else claim ownership to my posts?

No. Who do you think would try to claim ownership?

I do worry that there's a line of text in some legal document claiming when I clicked "I Accept" I gave up all my content.

There is no "I Accept" button in WordPress.

Thanks for the reply esmi and khena25. If I understand you correctly, WordPress and other blogging tools are just that: tools. My concern stems from websites like Facebook where, when you post information, the site can store and use it for it sown purposes. Put another way, you don't really own your information.

I do worry that there's a line of text in some legal document claiming when I clicked "I Accept" I gave up all my content.

There is no "I Accept" button in WordPress.

I was worried there is some disclaimer that includes WordPress' (or any other tool's) right to use my blog information for their own ends. Is this the case?

You'd need to check the fine print on wordpress.com for their hosted sites. With a WordPress.org self-hosted site, all of the content is stored in your hosting account, so the issue doesn't apply.

Thanks, esmi. So I may need to worry about hosted sites, but if I buy my own hosting account, everything on it is registered to me.

    That's pretty much it.
