• All,

I have absolutely no programming skills and most of my admin screen is blank. I have no problem logging in and can see the site looks fine on the internet (www.succinctresearch.com). The admin toolbar on the left side of the screen is there and I can access some of the things on it. For example, I can access my SmallBiz theme options under “Appearance”, but I can’t access any of the other things under Appearance. I can also access “BWS Plugins” and “CodeGuard” on the admin panel toolbar on the left side of the screen. Finally, I can’t see the grey navigation bar at the top of the screen when I try to login, but I can access it if I click on “Appearance” while logged into the admin screen.

Basically, I can see that I have plugins but I can’t update them or add anything to my blog.

I think my sin is not conducting all the updates as they arrived. I have 10 updates, but can’t get them to work because of the white screen. I don’t know which WordPress version I’m using because the following statement is at the top of the screen for my theme: “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.” And, “WordPress 3.8 is available! Please update now.”

I tried re-naming the plugin and theme files on my Bluehost account and had no success. I went one-by-one and it didn’t fix the problem. I even changed each file’s name, logged out, then logged back in each time and it didn’t work. When I changed the theme names, it blanked out my site on the internet, which makes me think the problem is with a plugin or the fact that I need to update wordpress.

Anyone out there want to give me a hand. I’m at a loss and this has ruined my morning.

I just scanned my site with Sucuri SiteCheck and it said my WordPress version was outdated. How can I update it with the Blank admin screen?

I have been receiving a blank admin screen ever since I updated WordPress with the new 3.8 update. If you login to your cpanel, you can update your wordpress version from there.

It looks like it’s not effecting the main website on my hosting, just the ancillary sites. I updated the main site. Hopefully that will help

How do i update wordpress from my cpanel? (I use Bluehost)

    Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – backing up your database.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

I did all of those suggestions except re-uploading all my files.

-Renaming files doesnt work at all.

-Resetting the plugins according to the troubleshooting screen doesnt work. In fact, I’ve accidentally deleted all of the plugins I used to have in phpMyAdmin and need to figure out how to reupload them from the backedup SQL files.

-I backed up the database (SQL files), but can’t find a video/guide for reinstalling them on Bluehost, so I’m not going to delete them from my hosting until I figure out how to put them back.

-I tried to manually upgrade via wp-admin/upgrade.php and got the following message:
    “No Update Required
Your WordPress database is already up-to-date!
    Continue”
This is incorrect because the website still says I need to update.

Things are starting to go sideways now. Now I need to figure out how to upload the plugins I used to have. Any help or extremely explicit tutorials on how I can put SQL files back on phpmyadmin?

I’ve accidentally deleted all of the plugins I used to have in phpMyAdmin

Sorry? Your plugin are in wp-content/plugins…

can’t find a video/guide for reinstalling them on Bluehost

No one suggested restoring this backup.

    I did this:
Use phpMyAdmin to deactivate all plugins.

In the table wp_options, under the option_name column (field) find the active_plugins row
    Change the option_value field to: a:0:{}

Now I want to change the option_value field back to what it was using the SQL backup I created earlier

So you simply reset your plugin using Phpmyadmin? You did not delete them?

Ok. Well that didnt work either then.

You do realise that you were supposed to carry out all of the above steps. No single step was intended as a “solution”.

Try checking your site’s error logs for a more specific error message. Your hosts should be able to help you accessing your site’s error logs.

Sorry, I didnt realize that was a whole package. BTW thanks for helping. You can tell that I pretty much have no idea what I’m doing. So, I did all the previously mentioned steps except:
“- re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.”

Just to get this straight, I download the new version of wordpress. Then I re-upload all the old file folders except for the ones you mentioned?

I did all the previously mentioned steps except

That step is essential. You need to download a fresh copy of WordPress, unpack it and upload all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

This process is intended to ensure that you do not have any damaged core files.

    (@radmaster100)

I’ve downloaded the newest version and removed the WP-Content folder and WP-Config.php. I didnt see any root .htaccess files

Just to be sure, do you mean I should delete all the old folders except the WP-config.php and WP-Content folders?

Also, where do I upload them?

If you were not using custom permalinks, you may not have a root .htaccess file, Just ensure that your FTP client is configured to show all file types as .htaccess files are often hidden by default.

do you mean I should delete all the old folders except the WP-config.php and WP-Content folders?

Yes and all files in the root WordPress folder – with the exception of wp-config.php.

    where do I upload them

To the folder that you originally installed WordPress into. What you are doing is a core file replacement.
