  • Thank you in advance for your help.

My WordPress based website was hacked, and all the .php files were infected. So to solve the issue, I did the following:

    1. Backed up posts/pages/content etc.
    2. Deleted all of WordPress files
    3. Deleted the database it was installed on
    4. Reinstalled WordPress using cPanel

Immediately after install I got this error on the screen where it gave me my login URL: “That mysql username is taken”

I go to my website and login page and nothing appears. There are no conflicting plugins or themes (a fresh install and I haven’t even gotten to use them yet) and I’m getting this error immediately after the cPanel re installation.

If anyone has any help, I’m more than receptive right now. Thank you for your time.

  • do you use the auto installer script such as Softaculous or Fantastico?

Thank you for your reply. Yes I use Fantastico to install

Go into the MySQL section of your CPanel and delete the database and users in there. The error message that you’re getting indicates that Fantastico is trying to re-use a database or user name in it’s new installation when it didn’t delete that database/user before.

Fantastico and the other wizard installers are OK, but can sometimes create more problems then they solve. I’m not a big fan of them, and I always try to advise people to install themself from the downloaded installation files and setting up your own database. That way at least you know more about where things are when isues like this come up. 🙂

Hey michael, thank you for your response!

I deleted the database and attached users, so far no change. Should I just delete the installation again and try from scratch? What do you suggest from here?

I agree with you about manually installing wordpress…I’m downloading an FileZilla as I’m typing this. Again, thank you for your help.

If it was me I’d delete everything and install everything new myself. I’ve been doing this for a while, so I know where everything is and what I need to do, so for me it’s a pretty easy process.

All that I’d say now is good luck, and remember to follow most instructions an dyou should get there.

Click on fantastico and then wordpress do you see any installed there if so you should have remove link.

Eh…still saying the same thing govpatel.

Funny, I’ve deleted every single folder/file/database for this website. Makes me wanna scream!

Fantastico creates other files with it’s own data so that it can track what’s installed where. It’s been a while since I’ve had to look, but it will be something like ‘.fantastico’ or ‘.installed’ or something like that. These files contain the data from Fantastico, so if you don’t have anything installed from Fantastico any more, delete al lof these and it will most likely help. Just remember that these might not be in public_html and could be in your root folder as well.

You will find the folder in Home .fantastico and in that folder you will see wordpress folder you can delete that folder

    Wow guys, you are awesome!

@michael.mariart the files I was looking for wasn’t in the public_html folder. Right on the money!

@govpatel I found the wordpress folder located inside the .fantastico folder. I didn’t delete the folder, but I deleted everything related to the websites I was trying to reinstall.

This is the most helpful forum I’ve been across since I’ve been online. Thank you guys for your time in helping me solve my problem. @michael.mariart, you won me over brother. From here on out, manual wordpress installations for me!

Again, thank you guys for your help.

    You are welcome
