 * Greetings – I am hoping that this is a simple issue which I have simply overlooked,
and you’ll easily be able to help remedy.
 * Multisite on 3.1.4 – 8 subsites set up as subdomain
 * I have tried every type of upgrade there is – automatic, manual – short instructions,
   manual – long instructions, etc.
 * I have backed the live site up and set it up locally. I have deactivated all
   plugins.
 * I get a white screen on front end and backend *every time*.
    I’ve tried about
6 times. I am close to simply starting with a whole new install and building
the network from scratch, importing all content through XML files, and seeing
   if that works.
 * Thoughts? Any insight greatly appreciated.
    Thx CT

 * Check your server’s error logs. The White Screen of Death is normally a PHP error.

 * I’m not sure what I’m looking for in the logs, however I see no php error mention.
I restarted MAMP PRO, then tried to login to /wp-admin and still have white screen.
   No error shows in log.

 * You’re seeing the same error locally as on the network?
 * Locally, delete all your themes EXCEPT for twentyeleven (just kill ’em from the
   folder).

 * Crap – you’re a genius – I didn’t deactivate the theme. After removing themes
from the themes folder, I have access to the admin, but still white page on frontend.
 * I Network activated Twenty Eleven.
I then went to each site of the Network and
activated Twenty Eleven. (each /themes.php page showed that the currently active
theme was “broken”) I moved the previous contents of the themes folder back to
the themes folder and proceeded to the /network/themes.php page. All needed themes
were shown, and those which were previously network enabled, were automatically
enabled again. I updated all themes. I updated all plugins. I returned to each
of the /themes.php pages, and re-activated the intended theme. I returned to
the /network/plugins.php page and re-network-activated the required plugins.
I returned to each of the /plugins.php page and re-network-activated the required
plugins. I am currently going through all plugin settings and confirming accuracy
   against live site.
 * I’ll let you know of further anomalies – thank you kindly.
 * In short, it seems that my first and only error had been not setting Twenty Eleven
as the currently active theme, at the same time that I deactivated all plugins.

 * And that’s an easy mistake to make. It’s a bummer when it’s a theme issue, though!
Usually the error log will spit out something to do with the functions.php when
   it’s that.

 * Actually, the instruction to deactivate all themes and activate default isn’t
even in the manual upgrade instructions – I think it’s been some time since this
post has been scrutinized and updated:

 * Thank you much for your help … I’m down to one last plugin update … WP e-Commerce…
   fingers crossed.

 * Because you don’t have to _most of the time_. I mean … I never do.
