White flash caused by Critical CSS

That’s Google Optimize’s “anti-flicker snippet” which hides your page until rendered with @karkidennis. it is the opposite of what critical CSS aims to do (which is having your page visible asap).

well, if you have that snippet active, you’re (re-)hiding the rendered page which is … useless really. so yeah, I would definitively disable that.

only downside is that when you are doing multivariate experiments with Google Optimize (which uses JS to alter the way the page looks/ behaves), there will be some flickering, but that’s multi-variate testing for you, it does have it’s downsides.
