Everything on my site needs multiple updates. I've been scared to do any of it...but now my basic wp needs to get current. Which should I do first and how do I ensure I don't lose my site throughout this process of finding compatibility routes for the plugins, etc. BTW: still scared.

My suggestion would be to update with all plugins OFF and the default theme activated.

First of all you should setup a clone wordpress website with the same settings as your live site. Eg. dev.yourwebsite.com

Then go for updating the plugins and wordpress core on the clone site. if everything goes well, Then you can update the live site as well.

I do it almost all of the time for wp or plugin updates.
