Good morning! Well I have to rebuild my website and I’d like to do it in a better way this time so I won’t have to do this again.

Short history. GoDaddy is my host and I use the WordPress app on their site. I created my first site using a Child’s Theme. I recently upgraded WordPress and found that my pages disappeared and my style sheets were unreadable.

Question: Wouldn’t it be better if I installed WordPress on my home pc and just uploaded my site? That way, I can back up my site easier and have an easier time editing because I don’t have to use the FTP manager on GoDaddy’s site.

  • WordPress does not just generate your web site as a bunch of HTML files that can then be used until the next time you change something on your site. WordPress dynamically generates each web page every time a visitor looks at your site.

Therefore, you could not just run WordPress on your home pc and NOT run WordPress on GoDaddy. WordPress will not generate your web site on your home pc in a manner (HTML files) that you could just upload.

Child Themes are meant to avoid the kind of upgrade problem that you experienced. So, I cannot offer an explanation of what happened.

But, Backups are the correct way to avoid the situation you found yourself in. Either you or GoDaddy should be regularly backing up both your WordPress files AND the WordPress database. And, most important, you should check everything out by attempting a restore from the backup BEFORE disaster strikes.

Ok. Thanks for the explanation I could understand. 🙂

Hi, I have my own Synology server which has WordPress package installed.

I have started using it and I am really enjoying it, I have created a few pages, however, I cannot see “My Blogs” in the Dashboard menu.

Can I host my wordpress site on my server like this or do I need to buy a domain from WordPress.

    Regards
    Keith
