Where'd that calendar go? (10 posts)

OK, so I was installing a THEME from Alex King's collection of themes, templates, and other doo-hickies. As this THEME only includes a "style.css" file, I duplicated the "classic" theme folder, gave it a new name, and dropped the Alex King style file into the folder, replacing the old one.

It looks good, but why don't I see the calendar? It's supposed to work fine with the CLASSIC template, right?

While we're at it, how do I add a "Recent Posts" feature to the right menu? Should I mess with the "index.php" file or the "style.css" file?

I'm using the "DOTS" theme, and for the life of me, I can't figure out how to determine what goes on the right menu vs the left menu. What is the secret?

Here's the link for the "DOTS" theme:

The link for the calendar is "there" in the Dots Theme you linked to. If we could see your site, that would help us find out where it "should" be with your setup.

Open the sidebar.php and search for "calendar" and see if there are comment codes around the calendar section.

To list recent posts, try Coffee2code's Customizable Post Listings plugin. It allows you to add recent, random, and other sets of post lists to your sidebar or wherever.

As for what goes on which side of the sidebar, you got me. I haven't looked a the CSS on this, but I'd add comments to the different sections that say "this is on the right" and "this is on the left" to figure out. I'm sure it is all controlled by the CSS. Very interesting.

elvis, I never figured out how to control what goes where in Dots (when using with 1.5). BTW, you don't have to duplicate the classic folder for dots, if you make the necessary changes to the stylesheet as I posted the other day.

Why don't you pick a real 3 column THEME, not a style and customize it for yourself?

Moshu- Thanks for the comments. I'm still kinda clueless on a lot of this stuff. Can you recommend any decent 3 column templates/themes I can use? I've spent hours trying to figure this stuff out, but I'm still scratching my head.... Web page design is not something that comes easy for me.

Seriously, if you could help me find a good 3 column theme, that would be wonderful. If I could find something that looks like DOTS with a "recent posts" feature, I would be one very happy guy.

    3 column theme list!

Just browse through and see if you like anything.

    One list:

But there are other resources, too.
For recent posts - you have to use a plugin - Lorelle posted about it.
If you cannot live without Dots, take a neutral looking 3 column and style it like dots :)

And if you don't necessarily want a three column, and are open to EVERYTHING, try:

OS42 With Theme Viewer - Look at the VERY top of the page to switch themes.

I still haven't been able to figure out how to make all the pieces fit together. I've installed Coffee2code's plugin for "Customizable Post Listings/ recent entries," but I don't know how to make it all work.

For those that want to see my blog, go to:
    http://www.louielouie.net/blog

If anyone feels inclined to get under the hood, and tweak the parts, I've got the theme compressed at:
    http://www.louielouie.net/temp/waziz.zip

Feel free to email back anything to louie-at-louielouie.net.

My thanks again to all that respond.

    1. Did you read the installation intructions carefully? You just have to drop the plugin file in the wp-content/plugins directory, activate it from the admin panel > Plugins; and use one of the examples given on the plugin's page to make it visible in your sidebar, i.e pick one of the codes given there and you are done.
    2. There is nothing we have to look at in the theme: it's dots with a changed headerimage :)

I think I need to find a pre-built template. I cannot figure this stuff out, despite my multiple hours of frustration. I dropped in a comment about the calendar, but I have no idea if it's the correct location, or even written corectly. So far I haven't been able to see a calendar, in spite of the fact that this DOTS style/theme/skin is supposed to work fine with a CLASSIC template.

I installed the plug-in for the recent posts, played around with the plug-in panel, and tried to write the code. So far, I've been doing quite lousy. It's truly an excercise in frustration.

I won't be able to work on this for quite a few hours today, and will work on this sometime on Friday night. If anyone could alert me to a pre-built template that fits my needs (3 column, calendar, recent posts, sign-in admin, graphic header) you will have my deepest gratitude.
